How to Support Your Love in Times of Crisis

We all experience times of crisis at one point or another, but it can be especially tough to witness when those times of crisis happen to the ones we love. The desire to help and be there for support is only natural, but it’s important to keep a few basic principles in mind when supporting someone you love in times of crisis.

Be open and honest with all communication. While it’s certainly important to physically and emotionally be there for your loved one and offer support during tough times, it’s also important to be honest with them every step of the way. Let them know how you’re feeling, even if you’re not feeling great and having a tough time with the situation, and they’ll know they can do the same and can trust you to be honest.

Take care of yourself. Think of the emergency procedures on an airplane: You have to put your own oxygen mask on first before helping anyone else is with theirs. The reasoning is simple; if you don’t take care of yourself not only can you be of not help to others, you could even be a burden. Make sure you’re taking care of yourself and your health, both physically and emotionally, and only then can you be in a position to take care of your loved one.
