Toxic Behaviors That Are Damaging to Relationships

A strong relationship takes commitment and work, but it also takes the ability to recognize behaviors that are damaging to it. Here are two toxic behaviors that are damaging to relationships, recognizing them may just be the key to keeping relationships happy and healthy.

Holding the relationship hostage. If a partner exhibits a behavior that you’re not happy with, let’s say they’re not great at listening, it may be tempting to say something along the lines of “I can’t be with someone who isn’t a good listener.” This kind of reaction amounts to a form of relationship hostage holding, and can be interpreted as a thinly veiled threat. A better approach may be to say “Can we learn how to listen to each other?” and approach it as an issue you could both improve on.

Passive aggressive behavior. The words “nothing’s wrong” can have different meaning depending on the tone of voice used, and let’s be honest, how often have we said them either coldly or aggressively. Avoiding issues through passive aggressive behavior like petty actions designed to infuriate your partner do nothing to resolve those issues, and often make them worse or create new ones altogether. Clear communication, stating feelings openly, and dealing with issues head on and the best ways to solve any spat, and go a long way towards building strong bonds.
