Five of the Best Modern Comic Book Romances

Here are some of the most vivid and memorable couplings in popular comics of the last few decades.

Maya & Rob in RASL

As an acronym for Romance at the Speed of Light, this comic revolves around the relationship between scientists Rob and Maya. Rob has an affair with his best friend’s wife and leaves his job to hijack priceless art in parallel dimensions, and it’s while he’s in these dimensions that he finds other versions of Maya.

Harley Quinn & The Joker in Batman

Former psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel falls for her patient The Joker when she abandons the Hippocratic Oath to help him rob banks and terrorize Gotham City. This comic is about compromise and fidelity as Quinn sticks to her man despite the fact that he wears his severed face like a mask.

Agent 355 & Yorick Brown in Y: The Last Man

As the last human male on the planet, Yorick Brown has a long-distance relationship with his girlfriend in Australia. It is only at the end of the comic that you realize his true affections when his dream reveals that his personal government escort, Agent 355, wants to do more than just guard him. Although the relationship never reaches fruition, the comic is full of witty banter and suppressed desire.

Apollo & Midnighter in The Authority

Should Superman pair up with Lois Lane or Wonder Woman? How about neither. In the adventures of Apollo and Midnighter, two Superman and Batman type characters portray a gay couple who marry and adopt a toddler.

Bigby Wolf & Snow White in Fables

In this comic, Bigby Wolf retires from stalking grandmas and pigs to raise a litter of human-wolf hybrids with Snow White. Together, they are one of the most mature and stable unions in modern-day comics.
